I am fascinated by the way the Europeans make even the skimpiest, old, rather rough looking balconies seem inviting. Many of them open on rather narrow backstreets with not much of anything to look at except the other side of the narrow way which looks similar in nature. BUT, you could stand on the balcony and chat with several of your neighbors. I guess it would be like a quaint "sitting on the back porch."
Romeo, Romeo, where art thou?
The windows are more often than not open most of the day. Then, just like in the movies, you can see people come to the window, stick out there heads for a look-see then close the shutters.
Many of these balconies really do not have any room for sitting or even standing outside. Often they are filled with plants.
