First stop in Italy

This town is known for two major items. Parma ham (prosciutto) and Parmigiano Reggiano. We had quite a time finding our hotel. We have figured out one reason it is difficult to maneuver in Italian towns. The streets often change names after an intersection. You can be on a street and on the next block it becomes some other name, and yet another past the next block.
Many directions offered are road numbers, but the signage for road numbers are often few and far between. Had a good sandwich at a little bar/chocolate shop/ristorante. Young owner gave us Parma ham to try free of charge, he was very friendly. Not much else in the town impressed us. Parma has been around since Roman times (about 180 BC I think). Rather than ancient much of what we saw seemed just old and more run down. Next stop San Gimignano. Our first week long rental.
