Hofbrauhaus

One of the notable sites that I was looking forward to visiting in Munich was Hofbrauhaus. The inn/beer garden was established as an extension to the brewery for the Royal residence of Wilhelm V, duke of Bavaria. The beer hall was established in 1589. It is not necessarily the oldest in Munich, but one of the most famous. I had read about it before we visited. It is a huge hall inside that would probably seat a few hundred and also has a large outside patio and a ballroom.

There are a few walls with these odd looking lockup sections. Believe it or not these are individual lockup areas for personal steins and mugs. These locked personal areas are often inherited and passed down through the generations of a family. It is an honor to have one of these personal lockers for your mug and not easy to obtain.

Close up view of the "mug lockers."

These Germans (Bavarians) take their beer drinking seriously. I thought I was ordering a normal mug of beer only to receive this tankard-sized mug. It was probably about a half gallon.:-) Couldn't let it go to waste, right? One mug will definitely do ya.

One of my favorite things in Germany. Brots and kraut.
